      • My boyfriend and I are looking for a house to rent and found one that's being rented out by Williamson Company. I called to ask to tour the house, and they told me maintenence should be there so I can just stop by. I liked it. We turned our applications in, in person, to the office, well before the house was even available. The next week we got a call asking to clairify some employment information. That went smoothly, and the lady said something about how their houses are first come, first serve, and asked when we'd be able to pay a security deposit. We said we could right away, but my boyfriend hadn't seen it yet, so he asked if he could tour it himself just to be sure. Again, they said maintenence should be there until 4 pm that afternoon. We got there at 3:30, and the house was vacant and locked up. We called the office, and they told us to drive back to the office to pick up keys, and they said we needed the keys back at 4:30. We were starting to get tired of their unhelpful and unfriendly manner, but we liked the house so we didn't care. Yet. After viewing the house for a second time, we returned to the office and told them we were ready to put down our security deposit. THEN we were finally told, rather rudely, "You know there's an application ahead of you, right?" "Oh. No, we didn't," we said. "Yes, we do this first come, first serve, and that means whoever first sent in an application, NOT whoever pays a security deposit first." She went on to say some things about how she doesn't care how much money we make (which was a weird thing to say since we don't make much), but she has to give these people a chance first before she can consider our applications, blah blah blah. She was very confrontational, as if we were arguing with her, rather than standing there stunned, speechless, and disappointed. This entire time we had been under the impression that we were first in line, and had almost been counting on getting that house. It wasn't until we were ready to pay our deposit that we were told someone was ahead of us. They had many opportunities before this to let us know, which would have been nice, so we would have kept looking elsewhere and hadn't gotten our hopes up so much about this house. They could have told me when I turned the application in, when I toured the house the first time, when I toured the house the SECOND time, when they asked us about our employment, when we picked the keys up... They said they'd call us sometime to let us know if the people ahead of us work out or not, and they handed us a list of their other available properties. However, I don't think I want to deal with Williamson Company anymore after how they handled this incident. They could have been upfront with us about everything, but instead they chose to lead us on, letting us think we had finally the right house for us, when the whole time they knew that we were just a backup in the unlikely case the first applicants didn't qualify.
